What is it Going to Take?

You can never see it in her eyes
She’s perfectly happy until the lights go out
When she lays there in bed at night
Her mind is filled with hopelessness and doubt

Plans for a future she knows she’ll never have
Silent pleas for God to hear her dreams
Hugging a pillow and seeing where love touches
Never her, her unconscious mind screams

What is it going to take for her
To look in the mirror and not run away?
What is it going to take for her
To stop doubting and say “maybe someday”

And she looks at all guys distrustfully
They’ve all hurt her so deeply in the past
Once or twice her heart has put aside suspicion
Only to be made, again, into an outcast

Everywhere she looks, another fairy tale is coming true
Best friends, wrapped up in love, are always quick to affirm
“Love will find you one day,”  ”Your miracle will come”
But she’s given up hope, and her doubt is so firm

What is it going to take for her
To be able to lift her chin and find love?
What is it going to take for her
To believe in guys and the promises thereof?

And all she wants sometimes is a hand to hold
A shoulder to cry on and a forever friend to laugh with
But she knows the world sees her as something ugly
And she knows that the story of her love is a myth

Surrounded by friends, she wants something more
She’s right with God, she has so many plans
But there’s a husband-sized hole gaping in her heart
Fitted and waiting for a soul that understands

What is it going to take for her
To break out of every day life?
What is it going to take for her
To realize she’ll make an acceptable wife?

She knows she’s not beautiful
What she needs is a man who believes
Wholeheartedly
That she is.
